In this tutorial we will explore a GOMExplorer dataset that contains plans for future field development. This dataset is derived from development plans filed by operators with the MMS and contains information such as upcoming platform installations, pipeline installations, wellhead and subsea tree installs, and future exploration and development drilling.

Some basic data on operator plans are provided free on the MMS website. However, GOMExplorer takes this data a step further. The Rigzone team spends numerous hours each month culling through 30 to 100 page documents extracting the most useful data.

Let’s look at some actually data to get a better understanding.

Start by clicking the “New Report” tab.

Now let’s select the MMS Operator Plans search button.

You will notice several different search options. Each operator plan contains information on activities and their proposed start and end dates. By default the search form is setup to search any activities going on now and 12 months into the future. We will leave this criteria set as-is.

For this demonstration let’s search for upcoming platform installations. Simply select Platform Installs from the Planned Activities selection box.

The next step allows you to choose the data columns you would like in your report. The far left hand column contains available data columns. The middle column contains the fields currently in your report and the last column contains the default sort order of your report.

For this demonstration let’s remove the Plan Code, Bottom Block, Surface Block, and the Activity Type.

For now we are just going to look at the report but let’s go ahead and provide some style information in case we decide to look at this data on a map in the future.

I will name the report Future Platform Installations. Then we just need to click the View Report button.

The results of the search are displayed in tabular format and can be exported to Excel. This report shows us the operator, the type of plan filed – exploration or development, the date the plan was received, planned activities, start and end date of the activity, and water depth.

Let’s drill further into the data by clicking the Details link.

The detail page provides you with complete details on the plan. You can see the operator name, location data, activity details, and a summary of the activities.

The MMS Operator Plans dataset can provide your organization with advance notice of upcoming field development as far as three years into the future

This concludes the Operator Plans demonstration video.
