The following video provides an overview of the mapping and reporting capabilities
of GOMExplorer.

The home page of GOMExplorer summarizes the latest activities in the Gulf of Mexico
and serves as a starting point for building your own customized maps and reports.
Each day the Rigzone team interviews operators and service companies to obtain
the latest information on oil and gas prospects, development plans, rig activity
and more. As data is collected the information is loaded into GOMExplorer and made
easily accessible via customizable maps and reports. Think of GOMExplorer as Google
Maps for the Gulf of Mexico with rich searching and reporting capabilities.
In this tutorial we will illustrate some of the basic features of GOMExplorer. Let’s
start by clicking the New Map button. The Create New Map page offers several map
templates to start from. For this demonstration will use the Blank Map template.
Start by providing your map with a name. Then click the new map button.
Now that we have created a new map you can customize and search your map for the
data you are interested in. There are numerous map functions available in the navigation
toolbar. Let's start by zooming into the Green Canyon area. As you can see the functionality
is similar to websites you are already used to using like MapQuest and GoogleMaps.
A map is made up of several map layers. The Active Layers window allows you to easily
manipulate your map layers. You can turn labeling on or off, remove a layer or adjust
the ordering of the layers.
The map toolbar provides several easy-to-use functions. The Move To tool allows
you to view a specific latitude and longitude. The Revert tool provides you with
a full view of the Gulf of Mexico The more information tool allows you to dig into
the data behind the map. You can easily print your maps on a letter size paper or
in large format poster sizes.
Let's continue by adding some useful data to our map. Just click the Create New
Layer tab. GOMEXplorer gives you access to several databases including MMS data,
exclusive Rigzone databases, and your own data that can be imported into GOMExplorer.
Let's create a new map layer containing oil and gas fields in the exploration phase.
Simply click the Oil & Gas Fields link.
The first step is to select your search criteria. The Oil and Gas Fields search
page provides numerous search criteria including operator, water depth, discovery
date, and field status. Let's select several early development stages from the field
status list box. This will give us a comprehensive map and report of potential field
development projects. Step two allows you to customize the data columns in the associated
report. Let's keep the defaults. Step three allows you to stylize the map with your
own colors and labels.
Let's select orange red to highlight the fields of interest and label the fields
with the field nick name. Finally give the layer and report a name so we can easily
find it next time we login. Let's make sure this layer automatically gets updated
each night with the latest information and is available to our colleagues. Then
simply click the View on Map button.
We are now back on the map page. We need to clean the map up a little to make it
more useful. Let's click the Active Layers window and turn off labeling for several
layers. We will turn labeling for the block areas and water depth layers. Once the
map is updated we can close the active layers window. Now we will zoom into the
green canyon area again. Very quickly we can start to see several prospects come
into view. Let's assume that the Hemingway Cat prospect has peaked our interest.
Using the information tool we can get more information about this field. The more
information pop-up window shows us that Murphy oil is the operator and the field
is located on Green Canyon 501. For more information we can click the View Full
Details link.
The more information page provides in depth information on any point clicked on
the map. In this particular case the Hemingway Cat prospect is relatively new and
therefore is limited information. Their exploration drilling has not begun yet and
this field is simply what we would call a geological bright spot. Any notes gathered
by the Rigzone team from Murphy oil on this prospect will be made available on this
detail page. For now, let's click the Back To Map button to return our test map.
There is a wealth of information available within GOMExplorer and the map is just
one way to view this information. If you would like the raw data behind any map
layer you create, simply switch to the Report View.
The Report View page lists every map layer in your current map that contains data.
In this case we created one map layer and there is one report associated with this
map layer. Let's click the report name and see the data in a tabular format. This
report contains several fields of information including the field name, operator,
location, field status, and more. This report can be easily exported to Excel for
further manipulation and use.
As you can see, GOMExplorer is a very flexible mapping
and reporting tool for the Gulf of Mexico market and we look forward to assisting
you with your information needs.
This concludes the GOMExplorer overview tutorial.
